Leeds Tykes’ supporters enjoyed an informative evening at West Park Leeds RUFC, where recently appointed Head Coach Jon Callard spoke of his pride at returning to the club.
Callard, who returns after a stellar coaching career at Premiership and international level specialising in youth development, enthused about the foundations which Director of Rugby, Phil Davies and his leadership group had put in place prior to his arrival.
“We have to be realistic about where we have come from. The effort that Phil and others behind the scenes have put in to re-establish the clubs’ identity again is tremendous. The project here excites me and I am eager to see how far we can go as a group.”
Referring to the size of the task in hand, he said: “Nobody here is under any illusions about where we are and the size of the challenge ahead. However, it is important to break things up into small, achievable goals.”
Offering a glimpse into the dressing room, the 55-year-old said: “When speaking to the players, I often use the analogy of a Formula 1 race. In simple terms, we are starting at the back of the grid. It is our job to overtake each opponent one by one, slowly but surely.
“As far as the game plan goes, I want to make it as simple as possible for the players but I can already see that I am working with an intelligent squad who are receptive to new ideas, which is a great start.”
Present at the evening were club captain Jake Brady, with other squad leaders. Each member of the playing staff spoke of the four pillars upon which the foundations of the club have been built. More information each of these fundamental principles will be revealed through the club’s official media channels soon.
The floor was then opened for questions and a fruitful discussion followed. Tea, coffee and mince pies were enjoyed by players and supporters; they discussed the progress made so far both on and off the pitch.
The evening ended with an update on the clubs’ growing levels of recognition in Leeds and surrounding areas. Second Row, Brady said: “It is important that we get as many young people as possible to identify with the brand. We are getting back into schools delivering coaching sessions and actively encouraging children and their families to come and see a match.”
A great evening ended with everyone clear about the club’s ambitions. It is now up to all stakeholders to support the vision. We are going to need as many people as possible to buy into the culture we are trying to create to ensure the club has a bright and sustainable future.
This is the first of, what we hope to be, a series of similar events bringing supporters and players closer together. Look out for more information as the season progresses.
