Sad News

Much loved member of West Park Leeds RUFC the club are sad to announce the passing of David Fawcett.  David was a friendly and likeable character who enjoyed his rugby.  Often to be found having a laugh in the bar with his old and new friends that he made at the club. He had been a loyal supporter of Roundhay RUFC, where he served on the committees and as fixture secretary and then Leeds RUFC ofter appearing in his campervan at various European venues.

Sadly David was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer.  It was his grandson, Oliver who noticed that David was not himself and as a trained Anaesthetist recognised the symptoms.  The cancer was rapid only being diagnosed in late August early September.

David moved to Leeds in 1968 where he was a lecturer at the then Leeds Carnegie Polytechnic, now Leeds Beckett University.  It was there that he had an influence and impact on many young lives.  David was interested in urban development, taking the young students on a field trip to Belgium.

David had a lot of interests, aware of climate changes and the impact that we had on the environment David took up the art of beekeeping, fruit growing and jam making.  The house in the summer was filled with a sweetly sticky aroma of all things good.  David even had some goats which he believed the milk was more wholesome for his children.  Not sure if Meanwood urban farm got their ideas from David.  He was way ahead of his time.  He loved the outdoors and often took the opportunity to walk his two Labrador dogs which he adored.

In later life he bought a house in France where he had a small vineyard which he produced wine with the local cooperative.  The family spent many happy times together in the Summer months there.  His Daughter Imogen lives there.  Sadly, David’s son Oliver was killed in a traffic accident in France in 1992 which may have been one of the reasons for David’s early retirement from the University.

Although David retired from the University scene, he still contributed to education by doing a bit of supply teaching at Alwoodley.  He later became a Governor at St Peter Church of England School.
