Caldy RFC

31 - 28

(HT 14-13)

Leeds RUFC

Leeds Tykes missed out on a back-to-back win, gaining 2 points thanks to their never give up attitude. The away side were 10 points ahead thanks to Lawsons's foresight and pace. His second try zigzagging through the opposition from our 22. Caldy responded quickly, starting their first rolling maul of the match, which saw Tom Saunders barge through to score under the posts, making for an easy conversion.

The Tykes were having most of the play yet were not able to make much ground. A penalty attempt was missed. Both sides were chipping and chasing with Caldy fumbling the ball to prevent what looked like a sure-fire try thanks to an overlap. Leeds were moving the ball out wide with their attacks coming to an end from mishandling. When they were caught off-side, the home side scored and converted a second try from the lineout.

On the stroke of half-time Venables successfully kicked a penalty making the score 14-12.

Early in the second half, Leeds thought they had scored after taking a quick lineout. The referee denied the score, asking for the lineout to be taken. Caldy used their pack to build momentum and kicked ahead. Davies recycled the ball and made a break for Connor Lloyd to score out wide.

Caldy put some phases together and were rewarded with two quick tries, one earning the extras. Lawson scored his hat-trick when the ball was moved out to the backs after the forwards got close. Another knock-on as the drizzle was making the ball greasy resulted in Caldy’s final score.

Just like last week, Leeds scored with the last play of the game as winger Jukes ran up the tramlines for his side’s fifth try.

Final score, 31-28.

Phil Davies, Director of Rugby, said: “There was a lot to admire. We scored 5 tries away from home. We are happy to come away with 2 points, although on another day we might have won. We split the season into several blocks of 7 games. From the first block, we got 8 points and 2 games into the second block we’ve taken 7 from the 10 available so there are real signs of improvement. It's important we keep the momentum going.”
