Birmingham Moseley Rugby Club

33 - 32

(HT 23-19)

Leeds RUFC

A try from Birmingham Moseley in the last minutes saw Leeds Tykes lose a match in what was their best performance of the season.

Moseley enjoyed the early exchanges of the match, opening the scoring with two penalties by Jacob Fewtrell with a converted try scored by Samuel Pointon sandwiched in-between. The Tykes settled into the game with Charlie Venables adding the extras to his try scored from running up the wing, evading several Moseley players on the way.

Kieran Davies went over following a powerful break from Trystan Lloyd. Venables converted. Moseley retook the lead with a penalty. Davies started the next try from deep in Moseley’s half, the backs, especially Lawson, showed great ball handling skills for Jake Brady to go over. Tykes mishandled the ball which saw Lawson sprinting the length of the park to save a Moseley score. Their pressure resulted in a try for Coombes ahead of halftime, making the score 23-19.

Early in the second half, Davies missed the chance to narrow the lead with a penalty just inside Moseley’s half. Venables landed a penalty for a high tackle. He missed the next attempt when Le Roux was yellow carded for leading with his elbow when charging into Tincknell.

Ben Dixon secured the converted bonus point try. The lead was extended with a Venables penalty. Moseley’s Tonks’ try narrowed the gap, which was stretched by another three points from Venables. Leeds looked to extend the lead, but the ball popped out of the team’s hands for Smith to snatch the win in the dying minutes. Final score 33-32.

After the match, Director of Rugby, Phil Davies, said: “This was, generally, our most controlled game. With two bonus points at an away match, there are lots of positives. Some of the errors we made cost us the game, which was disappointing for all the effort and commitment from the players after all the effort and energy they put in.”

Will Smith, Captain, added “I’m enjoying leading the boys out and getting lots of support from the leadership group and looking forward to playing at home after this week off.”
